Wooden Deck Staining and Sealing Protection
Having a solid wooden deck in Canada requires treatment every two to three years due to the contrast from harsh winter to long warm summer days. This contrast in temperature can quickly rot and warp under protected wood. This then causes cracks and splits that allow in more water and accelerate the rotting process. Having a well treated deck will enhance the appearance and protect the woo for several years.
How to check if your deck is ready to be sealed
An easy way to check if your deck is in need of protection is to sprinkle some water on it and watch what happens. If it beads up and remains on the surface, it might not be ready to be treated yet. If the water soaks in right away, it’s ready to be sealed.

Deck Staining Preparation
Before you can seal your deck, proper preparation is essential and the old sealant must be removed by either sanding, cleaning or other revival methods suitable for your particular deck or previous finish.
Choosing a Deck Stain or Sealers
In the past, decks would turn black and green from the algae and mold that would grow from feeding on the oils in the stains and sealers used to repel water. Nowadays sealers use synthetic resins as appose of the oils. In addition synthetic resins also deflect and absorb UV rays, preventing the graying of your deck’s wood.
Opaque Stains and Sealers
- Provide long lasting protection.
- Best suited for softer woods where it in not as important to see the grain.
- Require more effort for preparation than other sealants.
Semitransparent Stains and Sealers
- Contain minimal amount of pigment and allow the wood grain to show.
- Suitable hardwood option as they allow you to enjoy the beauty of the grain.
Clear Stains and Sealers
- These repel water and protect from UV rays but do not color the wood.
Stained and sealed wood surfaces may need to be retreated every 2-3 years or earlier depending on exposure to the elements. Your deck surfaces should be cleaned every 90 days and inspected annually.
